Some of the holidays celebrated in Nunavut are those that are celebrated throughout Canada. Some of these holidays include Good Friday, Labour Day and Christmas. Remembrance Day is celebrated in Nunavut on November 11 as is Victoria Day. If a holiday falls on a weekend, it may be celebrated on either Friday or Monday.
Following the passage of the 1982 plebiscite which divided the Northwest Territories, the Canadian parliament passed the Nunavut Act which established the territory. The act was signed on July 9 and this day has been designated a holiday in Nunavut known as Nunavut Day. In addition, the first Monday in August is celebrated as Civic Holiday designed to celebrate the heritage of the province.
