The Employment Standards Act in Prince Edward Island establishes pay requirements for statutory holidays as well as establishing which days are considered holidays. Most holidays are the same as those recognised by the Canadian government.
Prince Edward Island celebrates seven public holidays including New Year’s Day, Good Friday and Christmas Day. Holidays that fall on a weekend may be celebrated on the Friday before or the Monday after depending on which day of the weekend the holiday falls.
Islander Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February. It is a fairly new holiday in the province, established by Robert Ghiz who promised such a holiday during an election campaign. The holiday was approved in 2008.
